How to Stay Consistent With Fitness (Even When Life Gets Busy)
Then we fall off. Either motivation extinguishes or life get's in the way. We've all been there, until we aren't.
Consistency is the single greatest action you can commit to in your life. Your time, effort, blood, sweat, and tears pay off in the face of adversity when practicing Consistency. This is true outside of the gym as well of course.
Consistency can also work against you if you constantly fight against it but yearn for it, keeping you in a state of muddled stickiness. So what do we do? Here are a few ways to stay consistent with fitness, even when life gets busy.
1. Give Yourself Some Credit
- Did I do enough?
- I could've done more...
- I'll never be like them
- The day's gone why bother
But truthfully, celebrating the wins brings light to how far you've come if you've been showing up for yourself, the important part is pointing the light in the right direction.
Consistency drives on willpower, so if you change your mindset by actively looking for positives then your chances of being consistent increase; this doesn't even take into consideration other potential benefits of having a growth mindset.
Yes you still have to actually put in work (in what world would we expect things to be easy), but your mentality enters a state that can say this instead:
- I'm doing excellent
- I am doing the dang thing
- What else can I do for myself
- Let's get a good night's rest
I like teaching self-empowerment through Health and Fitness and the Odyssey community get's a sense of it too, because we should be kindest to ourselves consistently.
2. Start Small
Similar to celebrating wins is putting yourself in a position to win. Starting small means not overwhelming yourself with too much at once. We also like to go all in and change everything that we can possibly think of in the moment. It's not just a challenge, but impossible to do everything at once.
Starting small lets you take dedicated 5-minute actions. These actions ripple positively in your daily life, like a breath of fresh air, making it easier to be consistent when reaching your goals. Then when the 1-3 habits you start off with show success, with proper habit tracking, then you move on to another 1-3.
In 8 weeks time you'll have checked off more from the overwhelming list than if tackled everything head on, allowing you to stay consistent even when life gets busy. Here are a few ideas:
- 15 extra mins on the treadmill once a week
- 1 extra fist of veggie a day
- Starting your sleep ritual with 1 day a week
- 1 extra bottle of water a day
- 1 chapter a night
3. Plan Ahead
This is true especially when you're young. I remember thinking around the lines of, "I'll start now and then it'll make sense." Honestly I couldn't be more wrong. Even if you're hit a strong stride the first few weeks, you'll hit a wall which you don't know how to break through because your current routine won't cut it anymore.
Planning ahead helps you optimize your strategy, avoiding burnout, and promoting consistency. In Nutrition and Fitness coaching this is known as Periodization and uses the body's adaptation mechanics for your benefit.
I'd also argue that this would help if you have business trips or vacation coming up. You'll be more likely to pack a TRX Resistance Trainer or Resistance Bands that take the gym with you.
Point is, that you'll stay consistent with your fitness if you plan your workouts, meals, habits, and mindset even on the go.
